Fire resistance requirements have been traditionally set by the Building regulations. Prescriptive, or deemed to satisfy, solutions are described in the Building regulation guidance documents. Depending on the building location and geometry, specific fire ratings are assigned to the different building members.
Recent fire safety research around the globe has indicated that the existing prescriptive approach lacks rational grounds with regards to overall building performance. The extensive research work paved the way eventually for the introduction of performance based design methods as an alternative. Since 2002, Powerwall has actively been involved in fire certification and testing with leading organisation in the field, such as the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and Warrington Fire Research Laboratories. Since 2004, we coupled with the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh in a three-year PhD programme aimed at further assessing our system in terms of structural capacity, thermal efficiency and fire resistance. Powerwall’s standard cassette wall offers a superior fire rating of a minimum of 62 minutes in full-build systems and a higher rating for infill and stacked systems.
